Cultural & Ceremony Support

Reconnecting with Indigenous culture is a path to collective empowerment for individuals and communities. Colonization disrupted traditional ways of life, stripping many Indigenous people of their languages, ceremonies, and identities. When individuals reconnect with their roots, they gain confidence, healing, and a deeper understanding of their identity, which can break cycles of trauma and self-destruction.

Cultural reconnection and empowerment are important in addressing and preventing violence against Indigenous people. When individuals are grounded in their traditions and supported by their communities, they project confidence and self-esteem, and they are less likely to be the targets of violence or engage in violent behaviour. Restoring cultural teachings emphasizing respect, balance, and kinship strengthens Indigenous people. By revitalizing traditional knowledge and values, Indigenous communities create stronger, safer environments where healing replaces harm, and confidence replaces vulnerability—ultimately working to end the cycle of targeted violence.

MMEIP partners of the Athabasca Tribal Council and the Nistawoyou Association Friendship Centre have cultural and ceremonial support programs.
